Greetings First Church Friends,
We hope everyone is well. If there are any needs you have for groceries or a conversation, please contact the office to let us know. We have people who are eager to help.

You can also join us LIVE on our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/firstunitedchurch
(The Livestream link is pocted to our Facebook Page each SUnday just after 10:30am)

Coffee & Conversation is Monday at 10:30am. We will reflect on a great little video about Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield. It would be something enjoyable to view with children and teens as parents and grandparents. We will speak about what stood out for us and our children if we watched with them. Coffee Time is open to all, so invite a friend!
Hadfield video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo62S0ulqhA
The Official Board meets Monday evening 6:30pm. The Transition Team is postponing our conversation about Tom Bandy's book, "Kicking Habits: Welcome Relief for Addicted Churches" to give more time for Board Members and anyone interested in reading it. There are also video links that cover the book here:

Looking forward to a new season. I do hope we take extra care in these weeks ahead and that all goes well.

First United Return to Church Info!
The Executive of the Official Board has decided that beginning on Sunday, September 13 we will further open up the church to parishioners while continuing to offer online connection and worship with Central and St. Andrews (pending their discussions) over the next few months. It has been an amazing experience to offer these joint services with the people from our area churches. Our building has been open for a few weeks with success for individuals who could not connect online in attendance. Please see the “Return to Church” email (sent August 23) for full details of the return to church plan to ensure safety while providing a worship experience.
While we used to shake hands, we will greet others with a nod, a wave or in another socially distant manner.
Key highlights:
- if you are ill, stay at home - you can still join online!
- entry from the back, accessibility door only
- RSVP in advance if you are attending in person (519-631-7570), attendance will be recorded
- mask wearing is mandatory, hand sanitizer is provided
- pews where bubble groups can sit are marked with green painters tape; yellow marks pews where you cannot sit
- no singing is permitted
- Sunday School will not operate, but we are looking at alternatives
We look forward to safely returning to our Church building!
If you have any questions about the Return to Church info, please give me a call and if I can't answer the question I'll put you in touch with someone who can.
Antler River Watershed Council has sent us information about an Online Tour of the former Residential School in Brantford. There are 2 tour dates – 7 pm on Tuesday, September 29 and 2pm on Wednesday, September 30 - space in each tour is limited to 40 participants. Thanks in part to your generosity, there is no charge for registration though viewers are encouraged to make a donation to the Save the Evidence Campaign – an initiative to restore the residential school so it can be open for in person tours in the future. email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for more info
"Pathways to Awareness & Understanding...Action Toward Right Relations" an online Conference & Webinar series presented by St. Paul's Circle of Indigenous Friends and Advocates. Conference: September 25 & 26. Webinars: September 30, October 7, 14, 21, & 28. Tickets are $35. Email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for more info.

From Your Finance Committee
Dear First Church Friends,
We hope this finds you and yours healthy, safe and well!
With this pandemic we are indeed in the midst of a different time and reality. Yet as always, we are not alone, God is with us!
If you are in need of support, please reach out to the Church through a phone call or email and someone would be happy to speak to you.
Church Office: office@1stunitedchurch.ca
Rev Daryl: minister@1stunitedchurch.ca
Church phone: 519-631-7570
First, please let us share some good news. First United Church continues to be a place where everyone can easily and openly experience God's great love. Even as some members of our congregation face new challenges, our first priority remains “being the Church” by providing pastoral care and maintaining relationships in our community of faith and beyond. Calls are being made, people are being cared for, Worship continues online each Sunday (joining with other United Churches in St. Thomas), we host ‘Coffee & Conversation’ online each Monday @ 10:30am - all to “touch base”, "keep in touch" or "make a difference" during this time of physical distancing.
It takes many people, lots of talents, creativity and vision to make God’s love real.
We want to THANK YOU for helping to make God's love real!
That being said, making God’s love real also requires funding. Today we are asking each of you to please reflect on what First United Church means to you ...and also your ability, whatever it may be, to make a commitment of financial support. At a time when some may have to reduce their level of giving, others may be able to increase their giving. We aren't asking those who can share more to “make up” for those who must out of necessity reduce their giving, but to share more, cheerfully, because this is how the First Church Family cares for each other and those around them. Within the church, ALL gifts are a sign of faith and an act of generosity to be celebrated.
So again, we THANK YOU for giving what you can.
Here are the ways you can share that generosity:
1. By online electronic transfer (EMT) from your bank to First United. Simply log in to your bank account online and select “email money” or “etransfer.” Follow the simple step-by-step prompts to direct your gift, of whatever amount you choose, to office@1stunitedchurch.ca. This is automatically deposited directly into the church bank account. (If you've never used etransfer before, you'll have to add First United's email as a "payee" to send a transfer)
2. On our website using the Paypal link (on the ‘Ways to Donate’ page). It’s very easy – just click the button and follow the instructions!
3. By issuing a cheque (or a series of post-dated cheques) to First United Church. A team of trusted volunteers is in place to pick up your cheque from your home (without making physical contact) or you can drop the cheque(s) off at the church by putting them through the mail slot in the Curtis Street door (South-West corner of the building, up the stone stairs). If you wish to have a donation picked up by please email or call Lori (office@1stunitedchurch.ca or 519-631-7570) to make arrangements.
4. By signing up for PAR (Pre Authorized Remittance).
To do this please call (519-631-7570) or email Lori (office@1stunitedchurch.ca) She will be able to get the forms to you and fax them in (it’s taking a little longer at this point due to the General Council Office being closed and only one person is updating PAR information)
We sincerely appreciate your generous spirit!
Please continue to watch for our ‘Update’ emails & stay tuned to the church website to see the list of ways we are reaching out to our community and creating opportunities for virtual contact.
Thank you for your continued support of First United Church.

Monday Morning Coffee & Conversation 10:30-11:30am (link to join is at the bottom of this email). Monday morning coffee and conversation will focus on Netflix show Queer Eye Season 5 episode 1 titled "Preaching out loud". A Gay Lutherean preacher wrestles with coming to confidence and purpose as a Minister and one of the members of the Queer eye wrestles with stepping back in the church that almost killed him. If you can watch the Netflix episode do that. If not, watch the clips. Let's wonder together about the welcoming church and what difference church makes! Be aware that there is some mature language, but the content is brilliant!

Monday Morning Coffee & Conversation 10:30-11:30am (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link). If you have never heard of Father Richard Rhor here is a chance to meet one of our current Spiritual Leaders in our culture. He speaks to us about the second half of life and how it offers an opportunity to enter life anew from the point of view of "maturity" which he says all of us need some help reaching for! This humourous and gentle video is an hour long, but I think even the first ten minutes of his conversation will offer much to reflect on personally and collectively as we move to our second half of life. The lecture will be a good introduction to one of our leading Spiritual Leaders in the church as well! Enjoy! What stands out for you?

What might happen if living into the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission meant having to revisit land ownership? A small community in Saskatchewan enters into the dialogue with the First Nations inhabitants that predated the establishment of their town. Heartbreaking, delicate and courageous, the dialogue helps offer a way to conversation and deeper community. What part do you think the church plays as news of a land claim emerges? Watch with us and share what stood out for you! This is a Joint congregational group - all are welcome.(email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link to join).

Families don't forget to submit your pictures of your word that describes your Dad to Erin at erinchute@hotmail.com (by Friday evening please).

Monday morning Coffee & Conversation we will explore a great 45 minute documentary called Stay Woke. It offers a history and the passion of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. It was made in 2016 and wrestles with many of the exact storylines that current protests are highlighting. Plan to join in by previewing the documentary and sharing, "What stands out for you?". I found the piece around the rebirth but separation from the 1960's leadership perspective very fascinating. Everything evolves, even with a 100plus year civil rights movement! It feels like we cannot be the church without being part of this conversation. Join in with us, Monday at 10:30am (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link).

Wednesday morning is Coffee & Conversation with Central folks (you can email Cathy at Central for more info: admin@centraluc.ca). has been good to share Coffee between congregations the last few weeks. We welcome New Vision and St. Andrews UC not only to share worship in the coming weeks, but our other opportunities like Coffee & Conversation times through the week. Let's keep learning each other's names and getting to know one another in this time of being online as one community.
Thank you to the Transition Team and all those who participated in our Faith Connections evenings. We learned about each other and our stories at a deeper level. It was the goal of the Team to help us nurture and live out our "welcoming identity" as a congregation. In order to be welcoming we must be willing to get to know one another- especially those we don't know! We shared many aspects of our faith journey, and most importantly came to know one another at a new level. If you have feedback for the Transition Team on this goal, please send a note or speak to one of the members in person. It would be helpful to hear what stood out for you and how you felt about the experience of speaking and or listening and being part of congregational life in this way. We do need your feedback, so please be responsive! You can email the chair of the Team, Sherry (sjohnstone1959@gmail.com), or Daryl (miniser@1stunitedchurch.ca).
Everyone should have received the email/mailing we sent out last week concerning re-opening of the church building (for those who cannot connect online - our online worship will continue throughout the summer). If anyone would like to reserve a seat in the church for worship in the coming Sundays please do so through the church office (519-631-7570 or office@1stunitedchurch.ca). Please Note that there will be many protocols to abide by, but there will be five minutes of silence following the service which will hopefully help the service have a feel of prayerfulness to it.
There will be more information coming this week about the Blind Auction Fundraiser, so watch for that! New items that have been donated include: Babysitting, Math tutoring, Selenite Crystal Lamp, Homemade desserts, Lasagna, Smores Kit, Yard Yahtzee, Birdhouse, Thirty-one products.
Until Sunday,
Rev. Daryl

Greetings to First, Central and Friends,
Church School continues Sunday mornings at 9:30am. All our children and friends are welcome to join in! Why not have them invite a neighbour?! If you don't have the current link, please email Mrs. Auckland at 27swifty@gmail.com and she will send it to you :)
Sunday Worship is at 10:30am. This Sunday is Pentecost, so wear something red! It is also Communion Sunday so bring a piece of bread (or something similar) and a beverage to "share"! We look forward to hearing from Pegi Ridout- Transition Minister at Central! (for the link to worship, please email office@1stunitedchurch.ca)
Monday Morning is Coffee and Food for Thought and Spirit. 10:30am same link as Worship (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link). This week First, Central and friends - preview this short (3 minute) and humourous video on Church as a way into our conversation. The link to the video is below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLQfhxDld7E
Central also offers a Coffee time on Wednesday mornings - email them at admin@centraluc.ca for more information!
Wednesday nights from 7-8pm is "Faith Connections Live" - Sharing with First's Transition Team. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. We are wondering about people's idea or practice of "prayer" over their lifetime. How has it evolved in your life. What place does it play in the church community and world?
In the next couple of weeks our Music Ministers (Jody & Lauri) will be offering an opportunity for people to participate in a Father's Day song! Watch for further details!
Also for Father's Day: We had a lot of fun seeing your words you described for your Mothers on Mother’s Day. Father’s Day is coming up and we are asking anyone and everyone (from First and Central United Church) to write one thing that you love(d) to do with your father (or father figure in your life).
For example: fishing, building, cooking, etc. Then, if possible, please take a picture of you holding the word(s). These pictures and words will be used in the worship service on Father’s Day: Sunday, June 21st. Please send your picture entries to erinchute@hotmail.com.
If you are unsure of how to connect on any of our online gatherings please contact the church offices (office@1stunitedchurch.ca OR admin@centrauluc.ca). We will be pleased to have one of our Technology Pros to get you set up. It can seem very complex the first couple of times, but we have people to coach you along!
Know we are looking forward as always to having you as sojourners on this path that seems a little unfamiliar! Chat soon!
Blessings!

Greetings to First UC and friends
Sunday worship is at 10:30am. Rev. Paul is preaching and Dave Mathers from Central United Church is our worship leader. We look forward to being together again! (Link provided at the bottom of this email)
Our Church School children have been attending Sunday School online with Central's Sunday School via Zoom meetings - Sundays @ 9:30am. If you don't have the current link, please email Mrs. Auckland at 27 swifty@gmail.com and she will send it to you.
Monday Morning Coffee & Conversation (Monday @ 10:30am, same link as worship) will focus on a 15 minute video about discovering ways of connecting with others on their spiritual journey who may have no background in the church. It is a very interesting video about a project which expanded church beyond traditional Sunday morning gatherings. I think you will enjoy and connect with it! The link is here:
https://www.salisbury.anglican.org/ministry/lay-ministry/commissioned-lay-pioneer
Wednesday night (from 7-8pm, same link as worship) we will have our Faith Connections sharing time put on by your Transition Team to meet the goal of the Transition time. We hope to deepen our sense of welcome by sharing our faith stories and celebrating our collective journey as a congregation. Our first week we discussed why we come to church and last Wednesday we shared who our mentors and companions were on the journey. All are welcome to join in the work of our Transition Time.
In advance, I share with you that Pentecost is two Sundays (May 31) from now and we will share communion. You are invited to prepare your own communion elements.

Hello First Church Folks
Just a reminder to folks to join in on the conversation as we explore themes of faith life and journeys. The First Transition Team is hosting Wednesday evening conversations and explorations around spiritual journeys. The members offer their own stories to us to help generate helpful conversation for the group to share in. We aren't changing anybody here, we are getting to know the breadth of thought that exists at First! We aren't evaluating anyone, we are learning to love our church family for "where we're at now" and celebrating that! We will listen to one member's story tonight at 7pm and will be offered a question to ponder together. We hope to learn a bit more about one another and generate a sense of community and friendship during this time of being a part. Please join us Wednesday nights at 7pm (if you need the link, email us at office@1stunitedchurch.ca)
All are welcome, even if you just want to attend and quietly observe!
Don't forget to join us on Sunday at 10:30am for Online Worship - email us at office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link
Also, the Church School is invited to attend Virtual Church School each Sunday at 9:30am
Email office@1stunitedchurch for the Zoom info & link
Next week's Monday Coffee & Conversation group is at 1030am and we will share a TedTalk about Sacred Spaces. It is 15 minutes long and very good! I think it will be a great conversation! Watch the Talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K77a6TxE118
Email office21stunitedchurch.ca if you need the link to join.
Hope all is well

Greetings to the First Folks,
Thank you to all of you who wrote or thought about me this past week.
The death of a parent, as I said to someone this week, entails... “conjuring a long long history- theirs and your own”. I’ve come to see Dad as his own person this week with his own full days - 82 years worth of them. He had friends and belonged to groups! He was attached to addresses I didn’t have memorized!
(I knew all that...I guess! But now I understand it. All his friends are calling and emailing. Even friends in Brazil! He had cultivated this life that I didn’t really comprehend!) As for me, I feel like some of my history will only be retrieved on the threshold of a longer view someday far off. A parent’s life is essentially a vessel of stories. Some of the stories will only be gathered now sometime down the line and in “a fine and private place” as Canadian author Morley Callahan wrote.
So many of you know already about the first time you lost a parent. I’m not alone I imagine. Thanks for offering your words to me and my family.
This coming week Rev. Paul Vollick from Central United shares worship with us online. Join us Sunday at 1030 am. Or catch any of our previous services on our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=first+united+church+media+committee
For the link for Sunday worship (and Monday Coffee time) email office@1stunitedchurch.ca
Monday Morning Coffee & Conversation time - you are invited to preview a 10 minute video of my friend and colleague who is the host of Bedford House. He runs a program called Bridges out of Poverty and shares what he has learned about the conversation between the economic classes. It is a great way into a conversation about Christian Ministry. We are called to learn to value people across the economic sphere. If Jesus asked us to love those who are marginalized, I wonder how might we begin to enter into those relationships? Is there a way of learning responsiveness and letting people teach us about their lives who are economically disadvantaged. Join us for the “wonder” questions of our Christian formation! Don’t forget your favourite coffee mug!
Here is the link: https://www.united-church.ca/blogs/round-table/working-myself-out-job
Again, Thanks to all of you who held me in your care and Rev. Paul from Central who will share his sermon on Sunday and give me a bit more time during these days!
It is Mother’s Day on Sunday so don’t forget to make and then serve breakfast in Bed before church!! If you have lost your mom, I suggest making it and eating it yourself in bed!
Looking forward to seeing you in person sometime soon!
Blessings
Rev. Daryl

Hello First Church Friends,
A few things to let you know about this week:
We once again extend our sincere condolences to Rev. Daryl & his family on the passing of his father, Dick Webber, on Tuesday, April 28. Please keep the Webber family in your prayers.
As always, you are invited to join us online for worship on Sunday morning @ 10:30am (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link). Over the last few weeks we have been sharing our worship service with the Central United Church Family and it has been going very well! Going forward the three Ministers will be taking turns providing the message for all of us. We look forward to getting to know each other better!
Monday morning Coffee & Conversation @ 10:30am is still a go for this coming Monday. Rev. Daryl may not be in attendance but we will still meet for conversation. (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for link)
For our Church School
Attention: First United Church School:
Central United’s Church School has invited First’s Church School children to join them for a Zoom chat this Sunday morning at 9:30am. They follow the Deep Blue Kids curriculum as well and are attempting their first online lesson using Zoom. (please email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link and instructions) They have also included craft supplies you probably have at home to use during the lesson. We hope you will participate.
For the craft - Ideally 2 pieces of construction paper, 1 of tissue paper, scissors, glue and pencils, crayons or markers
For Mother's Day...
Mother’s Day is right around the corner!
We are asking the congregation (young and old alike ) to write just ONE word on a piece of paper describing their mother (or mother figure in their life).
Then, if possible, please take a picture of you holding the word.
These pictures and/or words will be used in the worship service on Mother’s Day: Sunday, May 10th.
Please send your picture entries to Erin Chute at erinchute@hotmail.com.

Hello Friends,
Just a welcome to all of you to join in online for worship Sunday at 10:30am. You can email us at office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link. We will begin to admit people to the virtual worship space at 10:25am. We welcome Central United Church folks into the community! If you know anyone else who would like to participate please welcome them. If Central people are reading this, Welcome to you, our brothers and sisters!
We continue in our life and work as a congregation. Our "callers" will be making their second round connecting with folks by phone. So welcome them. If you'd like a chat with Rev. Daryl, or are in need of assistance please let them know or connect with the office. As the weeks go on, these needs will become apparent, so let your church community support!
We continue to connect Monday mornings at 10:30am. This week we are invited to watch an interview with Matthew Fox, whose faith grew from the 60's and the Post War era. He is one of our early Creation Spirituality thinkers, a Mystic and Liberation Theologian. The journey of faith and belief in people's lives is rich and so interesting. The conversation will last our traditional hour! I'm sure it will be a wonderful conversation. This conversation is open to anyone, and we specifically welcome people from Central UC if they would like to join in. We will take time to introduce each other and get to know one another.
First Youth Group continues to connect with each other during this time. They are currently looking at how they might be involved in supporting the Grace Cafe/Inn Out of the Cold program. The church community nurtures a sense of care and gives opportunity for people to develop their skills, and reflect on their faith through service. First helps grow confidence in our youth so they can make a difference in people's lives. So we are grateful for the opportunities we all have to grow in our confidence to serve in the spirit of Christ, but especially our youth! Good on ya! We look forward to hearing more from the Youth Group.
Please know that First UC continues to be open and active in these days. Many people are working behind the scenes in many different capacities. The building though empty is checked regularly and the Finance Committee is making tough but faithful decisions as it meets the needs of the First Family. Thank you to all of you from the rest of us!
Keep well. Keep your sense of humour as much as possible. Challenge yourself to do something that brings a sense of creativity to a small moment of your day. Be patient with those around you! "Patience...NOW!"
Blessings,
Rev. Daryl

Hello to the First Folks!
It is Holy Week. We are still getting together, but online this year! You can join us for Maundy Thursday post dinner coffee/juice, dessert time at 6:30pm.
I invite you to have a bowl of water and some nice smelling soap, a towel and some nice warm water ready for a guided hand washing meditation. After we do that we will have a little conversation about some of our favorite meals we shared with people or in the church over the years. We will end our time of course recalling the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples before being arrested.
Please email us at office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link.
Good Friday Service we are sharing worship with Central United Church online at 10:30am. Please join in for a 1/2 hour observance of this solemn day.
Easter Service is at 10:30am on Sunday. We will share communion together. Please bring a piece of bread to break and share, as well as a cup of juice. It will be a simple service with some music and communion as well as a reflection.
Hope everyone is well this week. If there are any needs you have for groceries or a conversation, please contact the office to let us know. We have people who are eager to help.
Just a reminder that the church building remains closed to both staff and public except for the purpose of streaming worship. So all of our gatherings are online.
We will meet for Coffee & Conversation as regularly scheduled Monday morning at 10:30am.

From the Finance Committee
Thank you to everyone who has been sending their donations in online through Email Transfers & Paypal, those who have dropped their offerings off in the church mailslot, and those who are on PAR. Your gifts are GREATLY appreciated at this time. We invite you to continue to make your donations to First so that we can stay ‘afloat” and provide ongoing ministry to our Church community.
We have a few easy ways to give:
If you wish to have a donation picked up by please email or call Lori (office@1stunitedchurch.ca or 519-631-7570 to make arrangements. If you drop off a donation please call or email Lori to let her know (as we’re not physically in the Church building at this time, but someone will pick up the donations)
4. By signing up for PAR (Pre Authorized Remittance). To do this please email Lori at office@1stunitedchurch.ca She will be able to get the forms to you and fax them in.
Please watch for our weekly ‘Update’ emails & stay tuned to our website to see the list of ways we are reaching out to our community and creating opportunities for virtual contact.

Hi folks,
Just a reminder of our Safe, No Contact Food Bank Drive tomorrow afternoon 1-2:30pm in the Church Parking Lot. You are invited, if you are able, to help replenish the shelves that would be helpful.
Just drive by and drop groceries off in the parking-lot we will have a volunteer there for that 90 minute time slot.
You may pick up a palm branch for the Palm Sunday worship service while you're there. Also you may drop off your financial offering to the church as well (anytime actually, just place it through the mail slot in the Curtis Street door on the South-West corner of the building - Mail is being picked up regularly).
Thanks in advance and spread the word!
If you would like a volunteer to pick up your food donations (tomorrow between 1:00-2:30pm) or financial offerings (ongoing pickup is available) please reply to this email.
Our Online worship service this Sunday is at 10:30am. Email us at office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link. We will learn to make palm crosses (Instruction sheet attached). If kids would like to submit Acrostic Poems for Easter that would be lovely (Karen Auckland has sent a separate email to our Church School families with instructions- Thanks Karen. If you didn 't get the email, let us know!).
As we enter into Holy Week, we invite you to join on Maundy Thursday. We will share Handwashing and a Dinner together online. There will be more information to follow, but you can prepare by finding a hand washing basin, nice soap and a few towels for you and your family. You can think about the meal you'd like to bring to our virtual supper! We will share a handwashing meditation and speak about the passover meal and enjoy eating supper with our church family.
As we head into Holy Week, we go with the strength of Christ!
Know I am holding you all in prayer.

Lots of info in today's message :) L
Hi folks,
I do hope everyone is feeling ok and you have received (or will be receiving) a phone call or offered a phone call to someone in your church family!
Worship services will continue online this Sunday at 10:30am, which is Palm Sunday. We have a special guest appearance planned, so be sure to tune in!
Maundy Thursday Service is online at 7pm next week. Also the Good Friday service at 10:30am is being arranged. We will worship online Easter Sunday at 10:30am and have Communion. For Easter, we hope people will bring some bread and juice to share online as well. It has been really good to meet online. Some of us linger to share coffee and a chat after. That has been wonderful! We are currently exploring how we might meet jointly with our sister United Churches in St. Thomas and will let you know if Holy Week services will be a joint effort!
Monday morning coffee at 10:30am has been a lot of fun and offered food for thought as well. All are welcome to join in then.
All these can be accessed through the same link. Please email us if you require the link for Worship or Coffee Time.
This Saturday (April 4) we will have Palm branches for pick up in the church parking lot for 90 minutes between 1:00 & 2:30pm. Then bring them to the online service Sunday and make your palm crosses with us.
We will also be collecting any Food Bank donations during that time slot (Saturday 1:00-2:30pm). This will be a no contact drop off / pick up - just drive into the parking lot, take your bags of food out of your trunk and leave them in the designated area, and pick up your palm branch - easy! (There will be a volunteer present). At the bottom of this email is a "Grocery Item Wish List" for our Food Bank. Supplies are getting low.
If you would like, we do have volunteers who will pick up your food donation (and drop off a palm branch at that time) This will also be no contact - grocery bags will be picked up from your porch/designated area and a palm branch will be left in its place. Please email Lori in the Church office (respond to this email) if you would like someone to pick up a food donation on Saturday (4th) between 1:00-2:30pm.
Lastly, we invite you to continue your support of First through your financial offering. If you'd like to have a cheque picked up (email us - or offerings can be picked up at the same time as food drive donations - from your mailbox), or if you'd like to drop your offering off on Saturday (1:00-2:30pm - through the mail slot on the Curtis Street door) during the Food and Palm Drive that would be wonderful. Other ways to donate are listed on our website: http://www.1stunitedchurch.ca/ways-to-donate.html
We sincerely appreciate your support.
As always, we are pulling together as a community in these days and connecting often. I believe that as we practice social distancing it is so important to be mindful and attentive to each other. The habits, disciplines and lines of communication we create to connect now will become so important in the weeks ahead and will be a great testimony to the way we express our call and compassion as followers of Christ in these times.

This week's note is long but contains a lot of valuable information :)
Hello folks of First United,
A few weeks ago in our reflections on Orthodoxy, we learned that the early church, who didn't have a building, saw one another as the Body of Christ. We have been clinging to this image as we find new ways of being one people. Many of the leaders in the community continue to meet via internet to care for this old body, there are people who are making phone calls and connecting with everyone in the congregation to check in and listen to stories about the church. We will continue to have our Monday morning coffee time online (link to connect is at the bottom of this email) as we did last week. You may have read the invitation to "story-time" and creating your own stories on powerpoint and sharing them with the congregation! We have already had one submission, Bootsy's Backyard Adventure by Henry and Carlene MacMenamin. It was so creative, simple, funny and awesome. Thanks Henry! (see the email attachment of the story I sent out if you missed it!)
Our Worship Service this week will be streamed online. You can email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link. Thanks to all those who are the techies who are helping it all happen.
Please continue to read below the plea of the Finance Committee who are seeking a commitment to support the staff and maintain the building, and keep up with ongoing bills during this really uncertain time. We have considered several options around line of credit increase and dipping into investments and other measures. First has practiced generosity over its long history and this is among the most critical of times it faces. Indeed it is a such with many among us who face the same financial anxiety. If you are able to continue, increase support or pledge support, First would be so appreciative. If unable to do so, we understand the great impact many of us face in layoffs and business closures. We will support you as a part of Christ's Body.
I do hope your day today is finding a share of joy and contentment within it. We do have our story of the Sacred who has carried human history for thousands of generations! Time to lean into those arms together.
Rev. Daryl
From the Finance Committee
Dear First Church Friends,
First and foremost, we hope you are well.
If you are in need of support, please reach out to the Church through a phone call or email and someone would be happy to speak to you.

Our Church building may be closed, but the Church is open wide with compassion and generosity.
First Church is trying to find new ways to respond to the needs of the congregation, and especially those who are most vulnerable at this unsettling time. We want to continue ‘being the Church’ as best we can, as we move through the next few weeks of practicing ‘physical distancing by not gathering for worship in our Church building. Without “passing the plate” on Sundays during the weekly offering, we are quickly heading toward a financial emergency. Now is the time to act with compassion and faithful generosity. Please, if you are able, we invite you to continue to make your donations to First so that we can stay ‘afloat” and provide ongoing ministry to our Church community.
We have a few easy ways to give:
To do this please email Lori at office@1stunitedchurch.ca She swill be able to get the forms to you and mail them in (taking a little longer at this point as it has to be sent ‘snail mail’ since our General Council offices are closed.)
Please watch for our weekly ‘Update’ emails & stay tuned to our website to see the list of ways we are reaching out to our community and creating opportunities for virtual contact.
Thank you for your continued support of First United Church.
Stay well Friends!

Greetings to the Folks at First,
I hope people are doing well as they stay isolated and keep healthy.
Sunday morning we will gather online for worship. Please email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link or other ways to connect.
Unfortunately, with our quarantine, most events are cancelled that require face-to-face interaction. We look forward to the time when we can return to worship - together in one place.
Lastly, just to tell you that there have been several volunteers who will be making phone calls to all individuals who have contact information in the directory. They will be calling over the next couple of weeks to see how you are making out and if you need any assistance. They will also be asking for memories you have of First United Church. They will be recording your stories for our Heritage Wall as part of our 185 celebrations...so get those stories ready. As we progress over the next few days/weeks we will send more communications to you. We will be offering some "programs and fun" going forward.
In the meantime, we hope you tune into our service at 10:30 am on Sunday. Susanna Suchak will be hosting the online service this week.
Blessings,
Rev. Daryl
A Note from the Finance Committee/ Official Board:
With our church operating virtually for the next while, we continue to have costs that need to be covered. Please consider going online to donate to the church. Go to the church's website: http://www.1stunitedchurch.ca/ and then click on "Ways to Donate" at the top. Please consider "PayPal" or PAR so that our counters can avoid touching money which has been cited as a cause for some of the transfer of the coronavirus. If you need to donate by cash or cheque, you can slip your envelope containing your donation through the Curtis Street (South West door - up the stone steps) mail slot and Lori will be more than happy to deposit it for you. Your support at this time is GREATLY appreciated!!
Be well friends!
Greetings First Church Friends,
We hope everyone is well. If there are any needs you have for groceries or a conversation, please contact the office to let us know. We have people who are eager to help.
Thank you to those who continue to send in their offering. We appreciate your ongoing support! All gifts are a sign of faith and an act of generosity to be celebrated. To see all the ways you can give, visit our website: http://www.1stunitedchurch.ca/ways-to-donate.html
We continue to meet online Sundays at 10:30am for our Joint Worship Service with our own First family, as well as friends from Central, St. Andrew's & New Vision. We'd love it if you joined us - even if you've never done so before! This new season is a great time to connect with your faith community and our friends from other United Churches in St. Thomas. You can also join us LIVE on our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/firstunitedchurch
(The Livestream link is pocted to our Facebook Page each SUnday just after 10:30am)
Also, our sanctuary is open with 28 spots available. Please RSVP if you are planning on attending in person (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca or call 519-631-7570 and leave a message).
If you would like to sign up for worship leadership participation that would be great. We are in great need of volunteers to read scripture or offer as worship host. Email the church office if you'd like to help.
We continue with our Coffee & Conversation Time Monday Mornings at 10:30am (link to join is at the bottom of this email). The video this week documents the friendship between Bono (of the band U2) and Eugene Peterson (author of contemporary-language Bible translation The Message) revolving around their common interest in the Psalms.
Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l40S5e90KY
Church Directory going Electronic! The deadline for additions/changes to the Directory is Friday, September 25. Please email any of this info to the Church Office (respond to this email). Thank you!
Watch for an email early next week with details about an upcoming event we're planning! This event will be open to EVERYONE!
There are a few things in the works that we're excited about ...and we'll let you know VERY soon! So keep an eye on your emails!
Have a great week!

While we used to shake hands, we will greet others with a nod, a wave or in another socially distant manner.

Hello First Church Friends,
We hope you will join us as we continue to gather for Worship with members of the other St. Thomas United Churches (Central, New Vision & St. Andrew's) Sunday mornings at 10:30am (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca to get the link).
New! We've been streaming our Sunday Worship Service LIVE on our Facebook page the past two weeks - so you can check us out that way if you'd prefer! https://www.facebook.com/firstunitedchurch/ (Give our page a Like while you're there if you haven't already!)
A few notes about Sundays:
*If you are having technical difficulties getting connected Sunday morning in any way, we have a tech group who are willing to walk you through the steps. They have had good success with a number of folks. Contact the office if you need assistance (519-631-7570 or office@1stunitedchurch.ca)!
*Those without access to technology can reserve a seat at the church to watch the service on the screen (so if you know one of our members who doesn't have the internet or access to a way to watch our online worship - please let them know!). As mentioned last week there are protocols in place by the Ministry of Health and Antler River Watershed Region that we must abide by - STRICT Social Distancing will be practiced. Please contact Richard Auckland at 519-860-0381 or rauck27@gmail.com to sign up in advance.
*If you'd like to participate in the worship service (scripture, lay leader roll, etc) but aren't comfortable doing it "live", Tom Lautebach has offered to help! You can contact Tom at 519-281-1492 or by email tom@lautebach.ca

Until Sunday,
Rev. Daryl

Please wear any of your Pearce Williams camp shirts or another camp you've attended for this Sunday. So many people share that sacred space in common as well. We welcome Lindsey Feltis from Pearce Williams this week as we "visit" the camp and reflect on "The Strength of Sacred Spaces"
Summer worship will continue online with the good company of New Vision, St. Andrews, Central and First. "Our churches have left the building and gather in online space!"
Monday Morning Coffee & Conversation @ 10:30am (email office@1stunitedchurch.ca for the link). Send you favorite short, funny video to share Monday morning over coffee. Just for a change of pace. Send them to my email minister@1stunitedchurch.ca and I will present them! Join in for some laughs.
Wednesday morning is Coffee and Conversation with Central. Plan on "going with another friend from First. It is great to get to know each other from our United Church communities in St.Thomas. Email admin@centraluc.ca for more info.
Wednesday Night at 7pm join the Transition Team in conversations about Faith and our journeys. We are coming to know and appreciate each other on a new level! Thanks to all those who tuned in last week!
There will be an email from our Official Board regarding a gradual return to the sanctuary for reserved seating to view the online service. We hope to have that letter ready to go out in the next few days.
For Father's Day: We had a lot of fun seeing your words you described for your Mothers on Mother’s Day. Father’s Day is NEXT SUNDAY and we are asking everyone (from First and Central United Church) to write one thing that you love(d) to do with your father (or father figure in your life).
For example: fishing, building, cooking, etc. Then, if possible, please take a picture of you holding the word(s). These pictures and words will be used in the worship service next Sunday- Father’s Day. Please send your picture entries to erinchute@hotmail.com.
Last week an email was sent out about our upcoming Online Blind Auction Fundraiser. Details can be found at: http://www.1stunitedchurch.ca/upcoming-events.html We hope everyone will participate! This is a great way to have lots of fun AND raise money for the church at the same time! This event is open to everyone, so pass the info on to a friend if you'd like!

In advance, I share with you that Pentecost is two Sundays (May 31) from now and we will share communion. You are invited to prepare your own communion elements.
Hope all is well,

Watch the 30 minute video and join in the conversation by answering "what stands out for you" Here is the link
https://therealnews.com/stories/original-sin-and-the-war-on-liberation-theology-rai-with-matthew-fox-4-8

Hi folks,
Just a reminder of our Safe, No Contact Food Bank Drive tomorrow afternoon 1-2:30pm in the Church Parking Lot.
Rev Daryl

Church Office: office@1stunitedchurch.ca
Rev Daryl: minister@1stunitedchurch.ca
Church phone: 519-631-7570

Greetings to First United Church Congregation,
The Board took a vote last night and on the heels of the Premier declaring a State of Emergency this morning it has become even more apparent that First will not be gathering for meetings or Worship Services until April. We will pay close attention and heed the directives of the Government and Health Officials going forward. We are also following the directives of General Council & United Church of Canada Guidelines.
The Board continues to have conversations and make decisions in this period of time and will endeavour to keep you informed and care for the folks in our congregation who are in isolation. The Board continues to work ahead and manage the financial situation of the church. Lori is on holidays until next week but has helped enormously with communications, Dave is taking care of a list of extra jobs while no one is in the building and the Minister is co-ordinating Pastoral Care and ways to help people connect with the church family over the phone and electronically. Along with the Transition Team, we are seeking ways to continue being the Church community in new ways, which is ironically a way of stretching our care of one another. Please do not hesitate to connect with members of the Board with questions and comments. We also ask you to please connect with people in the congregation and just say "hi".
The Anniversary Celebration has been postponed, however it has been suggested that we ask people to offer "stories of our past and hopes for the future" for our timeline. We have posted a picture below of our "Wall of Heritage". We would like to take this opportunity to inspire people to recall some of your own memories of church-life that we can transcribe and post onto the wall.
We have a number of volunteers who have offered to call people and record your stories for posting. It will be a good opportunity to connect and appreciate our life together. I encourage you to spend some time wondering about your story of First and greet your caller enthusiastically! When we finally have our Birthday Bash it will be all the more fun!
I will be communicating with you again soon as First leadership makes adjustments in this time.
May Christ's Peace dwell everywhere.

Hello First Church Friends!
This is an important update from our Official Board regarding Sunday Worship & Church Events & Rentals in the midst of COVID-19
“Church is on for this week but we are adhering to local health unit regulations that want us to practice social distancing for gatherings under 250 people in order to soften the rise of the infections so as to not overwhelm the medical system over the next three weeks.
Also, there will be no coffee times, passing the peace, greeters, choir sitting together, etc. during worship. Your offering can be placed on the offering plates provided at the doors upon entering/exiting. The plates will not be passed during the service. It is suggested we keep a meter between us. We will have sanitizers available.
ALL church rentals, meetings/events and choir practices, etc., are cancelled for the week and until further notice.
We will do our best to connect by phone with the congregation and be the church in this period of time when we are all working together to curb the effects of this virus. We are learning from our neighbours in other countries that we have this small window to lessen the infection rate and keep it from peeking and being too much for the medical system to respond to. Caring for each other and our neighbour means taking some personal time for ourselves and staying home.
If you feel uneasy, are immunocompromised, or are feeling ill please take this opportunity to stay home, rest and care for yourself. Hold the congregation and the world in your best thoughts and prayers. Stay home and know we are in this together”.
We will keep you informed as we navigate through this situation.
Please take good care.
